Breast
Cancer Overview
In the past few years, dramatic improvements
have occurred in the technology used to evaluate breast problems, such as
film screen mammography, ultrasound and core needle biopsy.
Although breast cancer still affects approximately 1 in 8 women, better breast imaging techniques combined with breast screening programs have led to a reduction in mortality from breast cancer for the first time -- this means the chances of surviving breast cancer have increased significantly over the past few years.
Surgical Associates has played an important
role in the development of the Saint Francis Breast Center, a regional resource
for breast health. The Breast Center offers its patients a multidisciplinary
approach to treatment of breast problems, including breast cancer and other
breast conditions. Through the Breast Center, Surgical Associates has also
been instrumental in the development of programs for mammography, localization
mammograms, non-surgical needle core biopsies, open biopsy techniques, and
breast conservation (lumpectomy).
