Once you and your doctor have made the decision to pursue having bariatric surgery performed by one of the Surgical Associates surgeons, you will be invited to attend one of our educational seminars. You will learn a great deal about bariatric surgery at this meeting. You will also be given a packet of information that includes a patient questionnaire and written exam. We ask that you read and complete the information fully and attentively. You will be instructed on how to return your completed paper work to us.

Once your insurance has been verified, paperwork completed and returned, and the appropriate laboratory studies obtained, you will be given a consultation appointment with one of our surgeons.

If insurance is a problem, you may want to find out more about CareCredit, a no interest and extended payment plan service that is available. You may learn more at carecredit.com.

There are some things that you will need to do prior to your surgery to help ensure your surgery has a positive outcome:

  • You must stop smoking well before surgery.
  • Use of aspirin and/or non-steroidal medications before surgery will be discussed during your consultation visit.
  • Weight loss is encouraged before surgery.  This will assist in recovery, decreasing the chance of blood clots or infection.
  • Exercise daily to strengthen and build muscles, which will assist you during recovery.
  • Do deep breathing twice a day to enhance lung capacity in preparation for general anesthesia.
  • A blood urine pregnancy test will be required as part of the pre-admission testing.
  • Further information will be provided at the time of your consultation.
