Dr. Johnson also completed a fellowship
in colorectal surgery at Louisiana State University in Shreveport, Louisiana.
Dr. Johnson is especially interested
in the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease, including Crohn's disease
and ulcerative colitis, and in the care of patients with rectal cancer. His
use of the J-pouch or ileoanal procedure, a recent advancement in the treatment
of ulcerative colitis, has improved the quality of life for many patients
after surgery.
Similarly, Dr. Johnson performs operations
that permit some patients to maintain a normal bowel function after surgery
for rectal cancer. Through his leadership, Saint Francis Hospital acquired
endorectal ultrasound technology, a new imaging technique used to help stage
rectal cancer before surgery. Dr. Johnson is a member of the Cancer Committee
and the Patient Care Committee at Saint Francis Hospital, and serves on the
Colorectal Cancer Committee of the National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and
Bowel Project.
Dr. Johnson is the Crohn's Colitis Foundation
Association Chapter Medical Advisory committee chairperson. He is a Fellow
of the American College of Surgeons and is a member of the American Medical
Association, Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons, The
American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons, Oklahoma State Medical Association,
Tulsa County Medical Society, Tulsa Surgical Society, and the NSABP Colorectal
Disease Committee.
