| Dr. Gustafson was graduated from Kirkwood
High School in Missouri, and the University of Missouri in Columbia where
he also received his degree in medicine. He served a rotating internship
and general surgery residency at Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas, Texas.
Following the residency, he was a Captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corps and
served in Viet Nam. During his military service he received the Bronze Star.
Dr. Gustafson has impacted the lives
of thousands of people through his work as a surgeon and his leadership roles
in health affairs. He is credited with developing quality emergency medical
services in Tulsa and throughout Oklahoma. His efforts encompassed the planning
and development of emergency communications systems, training materials for
emergency medical personnel, and basic 911 services. He helped make possible
emergency helicopter services, the installation of EMSA, programs for CPR
and ACLS (advanced cardiac life support), ATLS (advanced trauma life support)
and the expansion of the Saint Francis Trauma Center.
He has been the president of the Tulsa
City County Health Board, the Parkland Surgical Society, the Oklahoma Chapter
of the American College of Surgeons, the Medical Dental Staff of Saint Francis
Hospital, the Oklahoma Surgical Society, and the Tulsa Surgical Society.
He was on the boards of the Saint Francis
Hospital, the Laureate Psychiatric Hospital and Clinic, and the Warren Research
Foundation. He continues to serve on the boards of the University of Missouri
Medical Alumni and Blue-Cross/Blue Shield of Oklahoma.
Dr. Gustafson is a Fellow of the American
College of Surgeons and member of the American Medical Association, Oklahoma
State Medical Association, and Tulsa County Medical Society.
